The newest NWSL expansion team is hoping to overcome its hot mess rollout last year with a shiny new name - Boston Legacy FC.

The team announced its inital name, BOS Nation FC, with a marketing campaign in October called "Too Many Balls." Less than 24 hours later, those campaign assets were gone amid widespread backlash. The team immediately apologized.

Boston Legacy FC's new name is meant to acknowledge both the city's long history and "its importance as a hub of future innovation," according to the team's news release. They relied on feedback from fans and brand professionals. A survey gave them 500 name suggestions which were narrowed down to 14 before the final choice was made.

A crest and wordmark will be announced in the coming months. Read more about the name decision and a potential stadium's future from ESPN.

Boston Legacy FC will begin play in 2026, joining Denver's expansion team on the NWSL's 16-team roster. In case you're wondering, Denver hasn't announced a name yet but they are also relying on fans to help choose from several proposed names. We'll loop you in when that decision is made.
